CGX just bought a lot of Nexpresses.

12 11 2008

Of course, none of them are coming to our shop… whatever. Our Indigo 5500 is awesome.

CGX is big into photo replication and all sorts of photo-on-paper applications.  I don’t know if I can divulge the name of our clients, but they are sort of a big deal.

The Nexpress can print on all sorts of substrates and can print over 2 million shts/month so it’s a good match both on quality and sheer volume.

You can read more about it here.

Houston for the weekend

18 08 2008

Just got back from the one corporate event I go to a year. It’s always fun to reconnect with colleagues and put names with faces. It was a really good meeting actually, mentally exhausting but good.

After break-out sessions and discussions (including one where a sister company said they are Ruth Chris while comparing everyone else to Waffle House. wtf.) we finally got to relax.

Friday night was small group dinners. We went to a Brazilian steakhouse, Fogo de Choa. I try not to be a high maintenance vegetarian, so I didn’t tell anyone I don’t partake in the eating of animal flesh. Everyone is obsessed with this place and I didn’t want to rain on anyone’s parade. I knew they had a robust salad bar, so I wasn’t really worried about it.  The taxi drops us off, and as we get out you can smell the food. I never have felt nauseous at the smell of meat, but this was so concentrated I felt a bit queasy.  We sat down at the table, ordered some drinks and started on the appetizers. Polenta, plantains and mashed potatoes! Yummy :) The red light/green light cards were on the table and pretty soon people started flipping their cards to green. The Gaucho chefs sprang into action and sprinted to our tables. These guys are fast. Super fast. I went to the salad bar and minded my own business. A little later in the meal someone said, “when are you going to flip your card over?” to which I replied, “I haven’t eaten this kind of meat in 8 years.” WHAAAAAAAT? We took a vegetarian to a steak house?” Everyone had a good laugh. I will say, that for $50, I think they could have made a better  salad ;)

Saturday’s dinner was held at the Downtown Aquarium. Such a nice facility. We were able to walk around the exhibits.  Saw some white tigers and stingrays (or maybe it was horseshoe crabs?). Upstairs in the dining area, they had a gold fish on each place setting. Literally, it was in a wine glass and another glass fit inside it that had an appetizer (crab salad?) in it. It was interesting.

Our table asked one of the serving staff about the fish and she assured us that because they are an accredited aquarium, the gold fish can’t be on the table for longer than 2 or 3 hours. They spend the majority of their lives in a really nice aquarium somewhere else.  That being said, the fish were soon whisked off the table and the main courses were brought out. (Pictures compliments of CGX LDP team!)

After dinner we  were allowed to walk around outside. I rode the Ferris Wheel and went on a train ride under a shark tunnel. Neat place.

CGX acquires PBM

18 03 2008

PBM Graphics is now part of CGX’s network of companies. Located in Durham, NC they are a major power player in this industry. One of their claims to fame… POKEMON cards!

(I never really got into that craze.. maybe because I was never an eleven year old boy?) Nevertheless, it’s a huge market, and they produce countless other trading cards brands. PBM is ridiculously huge. They drive around in golf carts..  maybe I could convince AG we need segways?

CGX acquires Cyril-Scott

28 12 2007

Cyril-Scott is a web shop in Lancaster, OH. They have 19 (!!) web presses and in-line finishing. They have engineers who develop custom finishing units to fit on the end of the presses. As you can imagine, its an intense operation.

Web presses scare me. I think its the idea of getting a really large paper cut.
